Fees and how it works

You’ll know what it costs before we start.

Legal fees worry people more than almost anything else. So here is how we charge, what a first meeting involves, and what happens after it.

How we charge

To start

First consultation

30 minutes with an attorney, by phone, video or in person. Paid before the meeting.

R [amount]
Most matters

Hourly, by seniority

You pay for the time spent on your matter, recorded in six-minute units and shown on a monthly statement.

R [range] an hour
Predictable work

Fixed fees

Wills, simple transfers and CCMA representation have one price, agreed up front.

Contingency, where allowed

In some claims you pay our fee only if the claim succeeds. The law limits this fee, and we explain it in writing first.

What a first meeting involves

  • 30 minutes with the attorney who would handle your matter
  • By phone, video or in person at our Rosebank office
  • You explain what happened. We ask questions and explain your options
  • We tell you honestly if you don’t need a lawyer, or if another firm would suit you better
  • You leave with clear next steps, and a written plan and estimate within [x] working days

What happens next

  1. You read the plan and estimateTake your time. Ask us anything that isn’t clear.
  2. You decideNothing chargeable happens until you agree in writing.
  3. We start, and keep you updatedYou hear from us at every step, and get a statement every month.
  4. If the estimate changes, we ask firstIf the work grows, we tell you why and what it will cost before we do it.

Costs that aren’t ours

Some matters have costs paid to other people, called disbursements: for example the sheriff (the court official who delivers legal papers), court fees, the Deeds Office, or an advocate if your matter goes to the High Court. We pay them for you, show each one on your statement, and charge exactly what we paid.

Our promises

  • A written estimate before any chargeable work
  • We tell you before an estimate changes, not after
  • A clear monthly statement, in plain words
  • Pay by EFT or card. No cash needed
